Tervetuloa! Welcome!

“The sauna is the poor man’s pharmacy.”

That’s the traditional Finnish saying. The Finns learned years ago that the sauna is not just a bath; it provides a sense of psychological peace and contentment as well as physical rejuvenation. Many people claim that the sauna relieves the symptoms of minor illnesses such as colds, revives the muscles after tough physical exertion, and clears the body of toxins.

The Uljas Koitto Temperance Society promotes temperance, morality, and healthy living through the benefits and virtues of the traditional Finnish sauna.  Founded by Finnish immigrants in 1892, the UKTS provides an environment free from the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or legal recreational drugs.

The UKTS is a membership organization. We are a welcoming society and invite those interested in learning more about the UKTS to use the Visit Us form on this website. Those who are currently part of the UKTS (Friends & Members), their invited guests, as well as visitors who make arrangements with us ahead of time are welcome to use our facilities.

Requests must be received by Thursday. Space is limited and not all dates may be available for visits so please plan ahead. The sauna is getting busy again! Attendance has been higher earlier in the day so if you want to have a bit more room plan to arrive at 4PM or later.

PROTECT BALD EAGLES AT THE UKTS

The month of February is when Bald Eagles start building their nests.  There have been three sightings of Bald Eagles on and near the UKTS property in the past week or so.  The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife wants to know where eagles might be nesting.  If you see Bald Eagles anywhere carrying nesting material (large sticks and such) MassWildlife would like to know.  Please email your observations to mass.wildlife@mass.gov.  If you see nesting activity on or near UKTS property please let us know so we can take steps to help protect them from disturbance.  If you see an eagle please observe it from a respectful distance so as to not disturb it.  Thank you!

THE UKTS NEEDS YOUR HELP TO

REPLACE OUR SAUNA STOVE!

Our sauna stove is the beating heart of the UKTS and we need a heart transplant!  The project is planned for June but we are raising funds now to ensure we don't deplete our finances and to build a strong UKTS for years to come.  We have secured an installer who is working on the final designs and custom fabrication. The project will include the surrounding masonry and carpentry work.  We'll include you in updates and find unique ways to recognize you and all of our sauna stove donors as a critical part of the project.
